Part of the Chalnella Herd  1981

The Chalnella herd of Shorthorns came into being around 1975 with the purchase of 3 Dairy Shorthorn cows at the dispersal sale of  Hebron Dairy Shorthorn herd. These cows were purchased on my behalf by Mr Steve Gawith of the Rozetta Shorthorn herd, whose help during my years as a breeder was of tremendous assistance and always greatly appreciated by me. In 1976, 2 animals from Chalnella competed at the Pietermaritzburg Royal Show - Chalnella Stardust a heifer and Hebron Valentine 18th, her dam. It was a great thrill when Stardust won her class and Valentine was placed 3rd in her class. Thereafter Chalnella exhibited every year at the Royal Show until sadly, due to circumstances the herd was sold. Shorthorns have been and always will be a breed I have tremendous faith in and I still feel that their worth in South Africa in particular is not fully appreciated. This is most likely due to the fact that the breed society is a very small one and little is heard  about this breed locally.
